High-Deductible Health Plan (HDHP)

« Back to Glossary Index

A High-Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) is a health insurance plan that requires patients to pay a higher deductible before the insurance company reimburses most covered medical services.

In exchange for the higher deductible, these plans often have lower monthly premiums. Patients enrolled in HDHPs are typically responsible for a greater portion of healthcare costs upfront, making accurate eligibility verification and point-of-service collections important for medical practices.
